Online tuition for home-educated families

Online Tutors UK supports home-educating families across the UK with live one to one online lessons. Some families want a specialist for one subject they would rather not teach themselves. Others want a structured GCSE programme with a plan, regular assessment and exam entries handled for them.

Every lesson is live with a real tutor, not a recorded course. Your child has the same tutor each week at a time that suits your family, including daytime slots, and you get a short written note after every lesson saying what was covered, how it went and what comes next.

How families use our homeschool tutors

Most home-educating families come to us for one of four reasons, and the same approach covers all of them: a qualified tutor, a fixed weekly slot and a note to you after every lesson.

Full GCSE programme

A planned one or two year route through English, maths, science and your chosen options, with weekly lessons, homework, mock exams and progress reports. We help you choose exam boards, find an exam centre and enter your child as a private candidate.

One or two specialist subjects

You lead most of the learning and want an expert for the subjects that are hardest to teach at home, such as GCSE maths, the sciences or English literature. We fit around your own plan and resources.

Primary and KS3 home education

Steady weekly lessons in maths and English that build strong foundations, from reading, phonics and times tables to confident writing, taught by qualified primary teachers. Ideal for families who want structure without a full timetable.

Children who are out of school

Anxiety, emotionally based school avoidance, SEND or a wait for a specialist place can mean a child is learning at home for longer than planned. A calm, familiar tutor at the same time each week gives them a routine and keeps their learning moving.

How our homeschool tuition works

Most families go from first call to first lesson inside a week, starting with a free trial lesson.

  1. Call. A free 15 minute call about your child, what they enjoy, where they are now and what you want from home education.
  2. Match. We suggest a tutor with the right subject and experience within two working days. If the fit is not right, we change it.
  3. Plan. Your tutor starts with a baseline and sets out a plan for the term or, for GCSE students, the full course to the exam.
  4. Learn. Live online lessons at a fixed weekly time on a secure video platform, with homework and practice set between sessions.
  5. Review. A note after every lesson, a progress review every half term, and mock exams for GCSE students.
Tailored teaching approach

Qualified, DBS-checked tutors who understand home education

Our tutors are qualified teachers and experienced subject specialists. Many have taught in schools, specialist SEND provision and alternative provision, so they are used to adapting lessons for children who learn differently.

Every tutor holds an enhanced DBS, completes our safeguarding training and is recruited through safer recruitment checks, including references and identity checks.

We match on subject, level and personality. A child with autism or anxiety gets a tutor who is calm, predictable and keeps the same structure each week. A GCSE student gets a specialist who knows the specification and the exam inside out. If the first match is not right, we change it without fuss.

Sitting GCSEs as a home-educated student

Home-educated children can sit GCSEs and A levels as private candidates at an approved exam centre. The exams, specifications and certificates are exactly the same as in school.

We help you through each step.

  • Choosing subjects and exam boards that work well for home education, including options without coursework
  • Finding an exam centre and meeting its entry deadlines, which are usually several months before the exams
  • Planning the course so your child is ready, with past papers and mock exams in the final months

Exam fees are paid to the exam centre and vary by subject and location, so we will talk you through likely costs before you commit.

Choosing the right tutor

How many hours of tuition does a home-educated child need?

There is no fixed rule. Our guide for GCSE is around two hours of tuition a week per subject on a one year course, or one to one and a half hours a week over two years, with independent practice in between. Many families start with English and maths and add sciences or options as confidence grows.

For primary and KS3, one or two hours a week in each core subject is usually enough to keep learning moving, with you and your child building on it during the week. We suggest a plan after the first call, and you can scale up, reduce or pause with a week's notice.

Homeschool tuition prices

Every home-educated child is different, so our prices are bespoke and tailored to your child's needs, the subjects and levels you choose and how many hours a week suit your family. There is no joining fee, platform fee or charge for lesson notes, and full GCSE programmes have a fixed monthly price covering lessons, planning, mock exams and progress reports.

Every family starts with a free trial lesson and there is no minimum term. If your child has an EHCP and the local authority has agreed education otherwise than at school (EOTAS), we can also work directly with the council to deliver the tuition in the plan.

Questions home-educating parents ask

Can lessons happen in school?

Yes. The pupil needs a quiet space, a device and headphones; a TA can sit in. Most schools run them from the SEN base or the library.

Are lessons live or recorded?

Every lesson is live and one to one, with the same tutor each week, so the tutor can adapt to your child in the moment.

Can lessons happen during the school day?

Yes. Many of our home-educated students learn in the daytime, and we have tutors available on weekdays from 9am to 3pm as well as after school.

Which subjects and levels do you cover?

Primary, KS3, GCSE and A level across maths, English, the sciences, humanities, computer science, economics, languages and more.

My child is anxious or has SEND. Can you help?

Yes. Many of our tutors have SEND and alternative provision experience. We start gently, keep the same tutor and structure each week, and adapt the pace and length of lessons to your child.

Do you set homework?

Yes, if you want it. Tutors set short practice tasks between lessons and give feedback in the next session, and the lesson note tells you what was set.

How quickly can we start?

Usually within a week of the first call, starting with a free trial lesson.
